Choosing categories that help, not hurt.
Why categories matter
Google uses your categories to decide which searches your profile is eligible for. The wrong primary category is one of the most common reasons a business doesn’t appear in the map pack for its main service.
Changing categories can trigger a re-verification, so decide once and change rarely.
- Step 1
One primary, the most specific
Choose the category that describes your core business best. “Personal injury attorney” beats “Lawyer” if that’s most of your work.
- Step 2
Secondary only if true
Add a secondary category only for a service you really offer. Google allows up to 9, but fewer accurate ones are better.
- Step 3
Match the rest of your profile
Services, description and website pages should back up the categories you choose.
